February 26th, 2020 - In Barbuda, work on debris management has begun using a mobile shedder under the European Union (EU) funded Housing Support to Barbuda project, led by the Government of Antigua & Barbuda and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Twenty-five persons from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) and Barbuda Council were trained in the use and maintenance of the Krokodile shredder. The Krokodile, produced by Komplet, is capable of processing construction waste at a rate of 20 tonnes per hour. A two-man team from Komplet completed the assembly and three-day training course this week.
Speaking at the training session, Chairman of the Barbuda Council Calsey Beazer said, “It is very important because we have a lot of waste materials on island, especially since Hurricane Irma.”
The shredder is one component of the EU Housing Support to Barbuda project which aims to repair or rebuilt 150 residential houses for the most vulnerable persons in Barbuda using the “Build Back Better” (BBB) approach.
The project also includes capacity building, technical assistance and greening through tree planting.
