Apr 7, 2017

On Wednesday, March 29th, 2017 the Global Environment Facility and the United Nations Development Programme, through the Ridge to Reef project, handed over a catamaran workboat to the Ministry of Agriculture, Lands, Forestry and Fisheries.

The 47-foot solid fiberglass twin-hull workboat was constructed locally in Palmiste, St. John and is equipped with two 200 HP, 4-stroke, outboard engines, as well as state of the art navigation, security and safety equipment.

Over 80 persons attended the Handing Over Ceremony, which was held in the Fish Market car park on Melville Street, St. George’s. This included 30 students from the Happy Hill
Secondary School and the J. W. Fletcher Catholic Secondary School, both of which stand to benefit tremendously from the workboat through their participation in the Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Junior Rangers Program.

Senior Fisheries Officer, Mr. Moran Mitchell welcomed the audience to the ceremony and stressed the importance of the new workboat for the implementation of programs such as the Reef Guardian Schools program, The MPA Junior Rangers program, the annual MPA Summer Camp program and the Coral Restoration program. The workboat will also facilitate research, biophysical and water quality monitoring and educational school visits in Marine Protected Areas around Grenada.

During the ceremony the vessel was blessed by Canon Christian Glasgow - Parish Priest for the St. George’s Anglican Church, before being handed over to Hon. Alvin Da Breo by the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative (Barbados & the OECS), Mr. Stephen O’Malley, who reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to providing financial and technical support towards maintaining and enhancing Protected Areas within the region.

Following the ceremony, guests were invited to board the new vessel, and were treated to a cruise to the nearby Moliniere-Beausejour Marine Protected Area.
