Global Applause for International Volunteer DayFeb 8, 2017
On December 3rd, UNDP Barbados and the OECS’ International United Nations Volunteer, Sae Nishioka, celebrated International Volunteer Day with volunteers from across Barbados. UNV, in partnership with a number of NGOs in Barbados came together to raise awareness about volunteerism by wearing branded t-shirts and handing out bookmarks in the streets of Bridgetown. There was contact information for local volunteer organizations and additional details on the back side of the bookmark, which raised awareness of volunteering and promoted citizens’ engagement to over three hundred Barbadians. Event participants were also encouraged to participate in the global social media conversation by posting selfies using #GlobalApplause and #IVD2016.
International Volunteer Day (IVD), celebrated annually on December 5th, was designated by the United Nations in 1985 as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. It is an opportunity for volunteers, and volunteer organizations, to raise awareness of, and gain recognition for, the contribution they make to their communities.
The 2016 theme for International Volunteer Day, ‘Global Applause – Give Volunteers a Hand’, recognizes volunteers worldwide and all they do in making peace and sustainable development a reality. United Nations Volunteers (UNVs) encouraged people around the world to give volunteers much-deserved global applause through social media engagement and country celebrations.
