The United Nations Development Programme’s Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership (UNDP J-CCCP) emphasized the importance of partnership to advance the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in Caribbean countries during a Side Event, entitled “National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) for NDC implementation” at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) COP23. The Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) facilitated the event in the CARICOM Room.

In view of the urgent needs of Caribbean islands affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, the “CARICOM-UN High-level Pledging Conference: Building a more Climate-Resilient Community ” mobilised a broad partnership to support reconstruction efforts, including through over US$1.3 billion in pledges and over $1 billion in loans and debt relief.

Through UNDP’s technical support and coordination to the PDNAs in Barbuda and Dominica, recovery and reconstruction strategies have been articulated. From these, UNDP is working with the governments to prepare for the upcoming Donor CARICOM-UN High Level Pledging Conference in New York during 20-21 November. The focus is on creating climate-resilient countries as these islands rebuild from the devastation, and promoting the resilience of the wider Caribbean.
