6 Reduce child mortality

Where we are

Whilst significant progress has been made towards this target, the reduction in child mortality needed to achieve the 2015 target within the next five years is equivalent to the gains realized over the past ten years.  This suggests a need to build on the investment made and gains realized in order to accelerate programmes to reduce under-five mortality rates.  Education and public awareness measures need to be taken to address non-health factors, such as violence and vehicular accidents, to realize further achievement.

The subregion has made significant progress with respect to the immunization of children against measles, with no less than 90% of the population of children immunized in most countries.
